How It’s Made

  • SUPPLIER

Our supplier has more than 18 years of experience within the local and regional craft industry.

  • MANUFACTURING

The sourcing and engineering of our cow horn pieces are done by our supplier.

Once the cow horn pieces are cut to size and molded, the horns are laid in the sun for 4 weeks to harden and maintain their shape. Afterwards, our artisans assemble the MOO bag and incorporate the interior vegan leather and closures to complete the design.

  • RAW MATERIALS

The raw cow horns are collected around abattoirs in rural and urban areas.

The horn is shaped into a distinct MOO bag by the removal of the horn’s inner muscle and the heating of the horn pieces into its desired shape.

The vegan leather and closures are all sourced from local Ugandan leather and craft shops.

  • SUSTAINABILITY

Before the collecting and engineering of cow horns, the horns were being burnt and scattered throughout areas in Uganda. By discarding the horns, air pollution and public health were being compromised. MOO is committed to environmental sustainability.

The horns are cut to size according to the product to be made out of them.

Horn primarily consists of keratin, when you heat the horn it becomes malleable since it takes on a plasticity that allows it to be flattened, molded or bent, which then hardens once it has cooled. The heated horn piece is placed into a round mold under a pressing machine for around 5 minutes. It’s then removed after five minutes and placed in water to cool down and maintain the new acquired shape.
